Defense is probably the easiest position in fantasy football to overthink.
You do not need the best defense in the NFL.
You need a defense facing the right offense.
That usually means targeting quarterbacks who hold the ball too long, offensive lines giving up pressure, teams turning the ball over, or offenses struggling to score.
That is the entire streaming game.
Forget the logo.
Forget how good the defense looked last season.
For one week, we care about sacks, turnovers, and matchup.
Here are the defenses I would target heading into Week 5.
1. Cincinnati Bengals at Miami Dolphins
Cincinnati is my favorite defensive streamer of the week.
The Bengals have consistently generated pressure through the first month, recording multiple sacks in every game and sitting near the top of the league in sack rate.
Now they get Miami.
That is the matchup we want.
The Dolphins have failed to score more than 13 points in a game and have become one of the best offenses to target with fantasy defenses.
They are allowing pressure.
They are turning the football over.
And without De’Von Achane, the offense has lost its most dangerous player.
That combination creates exactly what we want from a streaming defense:
Low scoring expectation + sack opportunities + turnover upside.
Verdict
My No. 1 widely available Week 5 D/ST streamer.
If Cincinnati is on your waiver wire, this is the defense I would prioritize.
2. Dallas Cowboys vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I do not particularly trust the Dallas defense.
I trust the matchup.
There is a difference.
Tampa Bay is currently relying on rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels while Baker Mayfield is sidelined.
Daniels threw two interceptions in Week 4 and now has to deal with a Dallas team that should be capable of forcing Tampa into obvious passing situations.
That matters.
The more Tampa has to drop back, the more chances Dallas gets to create sacks, pressures, and turnovers.
Dallas has not been a good fantasy defense this season.
That does not automatically make it a bad Week 5 play.
Defense streaming is about the opponent just as much as the defense itself.
Verdict
Strong Week 5 streamer despite the ugly season-long numbers.
This is a matchup play, not a bet on Dallas suddenly becoming elite.
3. Los Angeles Chargers vs. Denver Broncos
This one carries more risk.
The Chargers have allowed at least 24 points in every game.
That is obviously not ideal.
But there is still something worth chasing here.
Their pass rush has quietly been one of the stronger parts of the defense, with Los Angeles ranking near the top of the league in both pressure rate and sack rate.
Denver has not been particularly explosive offensively either, averaging fewer than 19 points per game.
That gives the Chargers a realistic path to fantasy production.
They may give up points.
But if they can generate four or five sacks and force a turnover, that may not matter much.
Verdict
Solid Week 5 streamer in a week without many obvious slam-dunk options.
There is more floor risk than Cincinnati or Dallas, but the sack upside keeps the Chargers firmly in the conversation.
4. Las Vegas Raiders at New England Patriots
This matchup looked even better a week ago.
Then Drake Maye played better against Buffalo.
And Kansas City exposed some of the weaknesses in the Raiders defense.
I am still interested.
Las Vegas has been one of the better defenses at creating negative plays, ranking near the league lead in both sacks and takeaways.
New England has also continued giving the ball away even when the offense has looked better.
That is the part I care about.
Maye improving lowers the ceiling of this matchup.
It does not remove the turnover opportunity.
And turnovers are usually where fantasy defenses separate themselves.
Verdict
Playable if Cincinnati, Dallas, and the Chargers are already rostered.
Vegas still has enough sack and turnover upside to make this matchup worth targeting.
5. New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota is becoming an offense worth attacking.
The Vikings have struggled to consistently score with Kyler Murray under center, and protection has also been an issue.
Across Murray’s two full starts, Minnesota has already allowed seven sacks.
Justin Jefferson’s status matters too.
If Jefferson remains sidelined, the Vikings lose their best offensive weapon and become even easier to target.
New Orleans has not been an elite fantasy defense.
That is fine.
The Saints do not need to dominate this game.
They just need enough pressure to turn Minnesota’s offensive issues into sacks and turnovers.
Verdict
Deeper-league streamer with legitimate sack upside.
The appeal improves significantly if Jefferson remains out.
6. Washington Commanders vs. New York Giants
Jameis Winston creates fantasy defense opportunities.
That has been true for a long time.
The Giants scored 30 offensive points in Week 4, so this is obviously not a safe matchup.
But they also turned the football over three times and allowed four sacks.
That is exactly why Washington remains interesting.
You can survive giving up points if the quarterback is also handing you sacks and turnovers.
Winston has already taken seven sacks across two starts, and his aggressive playing style naturally creates more opportunities for both big plays and mistakes.
Washington’s defense has plenty of flaws of its own.
That makes this a ceiling play rather than a floor play.
Verdict
Risky, but streamable because of the turnover potential.
If you are chasing upside rather than safety, Washington belongs on the list.
7. Atlanta Falcons vs. Baltimore Ravens
There is one condition here.
Lamar Jackson needs to sit.
If Jackson plays, I want no part of this matchup.
If Tyler Huntley starts, Atlanta becomes much more interesting.
The Falcons have not produced enough sacks or takeaways to make them an attractive standalone fantasy defense.
But quarterback changes can completely alter a matchup.
Huntley brings significantly less passing upside and historically has been more vulnerable to sacks than Jackson.
That would give Atlanta a much easier path to fantasy production.
Verdict
Do not add Atlanta blindly.
Monitor Lamar Jackson’s ankle.
If Huntley starts, the Falcons become one of the better late-week streaming options.
Check Your Waiver Wire
There are also two defenses that may be too heavily rostered to qualify as true streamers.
Check anyway.
Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers
Chicago may not be available in your league, but if the Bears were dropped, they belong in the Week 5 conversation.
The matchup is not perfect.
The defensive talent and ability to generate impact plays make them worth considering over lower-upside streamers.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Jacksonville is the more interesting one.
Philadelphia is dealing with injuries across the offense, including Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert.
Any offense missing that much talent becomes more appealing to target.
If Jacksonville is somehow sitting on your waiver wire, I would strongly consider them over the bottom half of the streaming list.

Best Week 5 D/ST by Category
Safest Stream
Cincinnati Bengals
Miami has consistently been an offense worth targeting, and Cincinnati brings enough pressure to take advantage.
Best Matchup Bet
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas defense has not been good.
The quarterback matchup is.
Sometimes that is enough.
Best Sack Upside
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers can create pressure even if the overall defense continues giving up points.
Best Turnover Upside
Las Vegas Raiders
New England continues giving opposing defenses chances to create fantasy points.
Best Conditional Stream
Atlanta Falcons
Only if Lamar Jackson sits.
The matchup changes completely if Baltimore has to start Tyler Huntley.
Looking Ahead to Week 6
Sometimes the easiest way to win the waiver wire is to make the move before everyone else starts searching.
Two defenses are worth watching now.
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City comes out of its bye with a matchup against a Chargers offense that has been giving up sacks and turnovers.
If you have an extra bench spot, this is the type of move you can make before Week 6 waivers even become a conversation.
New York Giants
The Giants face Washington this week before getting New Orleans and Houston.
That upcoming stretch could create multiple streaming opportunities.
You may not want to start them right now.
You may want to roster them before everyone else notices the schedule.
Final Verdict
Cincinnati is the clear priority for me in Week 5.
The Bengals get the best combination of matchup, pressure potential, and turnover opportunity.
After that, Dallas gets the most attractive quarterback situation.
The Chargers bring legitimate sack upside.
Las Vegas remains appealing because it consistently creates negative plays.
And Atlanta becomes much more interesting if Lamar Jackson cannot play.
The biggest thing to remember with fantasy defenses is simple:
You are not trying to roster the best NFL defense.
You are trying to roster the defense with the best chance to score fantasy points this week.
That usually means attacking vulnerable quarterbacks, shaky offensive lines, turnovers, and low-scoring offenses.
In Week 5, that puts Miami, Tampa Bay, Denver, New England, and potentially Baltimore firmly on the target list.
