Our Take After Week 4

Through 3 games he's WR61 at 7.1 PPR points per game, against 5.8 over 17 games last season (WR64). He's running ahead of last season's pace.

Last season he ranked 65th of 142 in target volume (10.3% target share), 71st of 142 in downfield role (12.3% air-yards share) and 100th of 142 in efficiency (1.12 yards per route run). Efficiency is the soft spot. C.J. Stroud is his quarterback.

The main risk is the job itself. He's the listed starter with Jaylin Noel next on the depth chart, and a benching or an injury would take his value to zero overnight.

The next favorable matchup is the Giants in Week 7 (8th against WRs).

Read our preseason outlook (June 2026)

Published June 17, 2026. Kept for reference; the take above replaces it.

Hutchinson finally carved a role in 2025: 16 games, a 57.5 percent snap share, 382 routes, and 57 targets for 35 catches, 428 yards and three touchdowns, good for WR67 and 63 fantasy points. The leap from his 2024 line (26 targets, 117 yards, WR132) is dramatic, and the efficiency backs it—his 0.226 EPA per play, 54.4 percent success rate, 1.12 yards per route run, and a tidy 3.5 percent drop rate all marked career bests for the former 6th-round Iowa State pick.

The ceiling is capped by opportunity rather than play. A 10.3 percent target share and 0.24 WOPR place him third in the Houston pecking order, and his 8.06 air yards before the catch show a possession role rather than a downfield one. He is a solid bet to repeat as a reliable depth piece, but standalone WR3 numbers require an injury ahead of him to unlock more volume. For 2026, draft him as a late-round dart and bye-week flex with clear contingency upside, not a weekly starter.

What is Xavier Hutchinson's projected role going forward?

Xavier Hutchinson is the listed starting WR, with Jaylin Noel next on the depth chart. Nothing on the chart threatens the job, so the role is his to lose on performance.
