The next favorable matchup is the Broncos in Week 4 (6th against RBs).

Read our preseason outlook (June 2026)

Published June 17, 2026. Kept for reference; the take above replaces it.

James enters 2026 as a deep-bench lottery ticket, drafted around pick 210 (RB63) and rostered in just 3.5% of leagues. The path to relevance runs entirely through Christian McCaffrey, who turns 30 in June and absorbed 450 touches last year. James spent his first 14 weeks of 2025 as a healthy scratch before earning special-teams snaps, then logged six carries for 28 yards and a catch in the playoff loss to Seattle. The 49ers reportedly came away impressed this offseason.

The catch is a crowded depth chart: Kaelon Black, Isaac Guerendo, and veteran Brian Robinson all contest the No. 2 job, so a McCaffrey absence may trigger a committee rather than a clear bell cow. Projections of 102 carries, 416 rush yards, 16 catches, and roughly four touchdowns peg him as a late-round dart throw. Camp will decide whether he's the contingency to own or just another body.
