Preseason Projection vs. Reality
He finished RB16 last season at 13.1 points per game.
Our Take After Week 4
Through 3 games he's RB63 at 3.4 PPR points per game, against 13.1 over 17 games last season (RB16). He's running behind last season's pace.
Last season he ranked 51st of 95 in rushing volume (6.7 carries per game), 6th of 95 in receiving role (5.0 targets per game) and 35th of 95 in efficiency (2.08 yards after contact per carry). His points come from his receiving role. Rushing volume is the soft spot. Baker Mayfield is his quarterback.
He's RB2 on the depth chart, so his value depends on the players ahead of him.
The next favorable matchups are the Packers in Week 4 (2nd against RBs) and the Cowboys in Week 5 (8th against RBs).

Published June 17, 2026. Kept for reference; the take above replaces it.
Gainwell's 2025 in Pittsburgh was the proof of concept: 148.3 fantasy points and an RB23 finish built almost entirely on receiving usage. He logged 85 targets, hauled in 73 of them for 486 yards and three scores, ran 344 routes at a 1.41 yards-per-route clip, and commanded a 16.3% target share, all career bests. As a runner he was efficient too, 537 yards at 4.71 per carry with five touchdowns, 14 broken tackles and a 55-yard long. That dual-threat profile is real, and it travels.
The catch is opportunity. In Tampa he slots behind Bucky Irving on a two-year, $14M deal, with Sean Tucker also in the mix, so standalone value is thin while Irving is healthy. But Irving is recovering from shoulder surgery and carries an injury history, which gives Gainwell a clear contingency path to RB2 numbers. Draft him as a PPR-friendly upside dart in the later rounds, not a reach.
