Kansas City Chiefs Fantasy Football Outlook & Stats 2026

Written before Week 1Updated September 2026

Kansas City scored 21.3 points a game, 21st in the league, and finished 25th in rushing. Patrick Mahomes made fourteen starts and Rashee Rice played eight games; the offence spent the year without both of them at once more often than with them. Kenneth Walker arrives from Seattle to fix the run game, and Justin Fields arrives as the most capable backup Andy Reid has ever carried.

Core fantasy pieces

  • Patrick Mahomes

    QBTop-five QB1

422 rushing yards at 6.6 a carry is the part of his game that quietly saved the season.

    • 3,587 pass yds
    • 22 TD, 11 INT
    • 422 rush yds, 5 TD

An 89.6 rating and eleven interceptions is the least efficient full season of his career, and he still finished as a top-five fantasy quarterback because he ran for 422 yards and five scores behind a line that allowed forty-seven sacks. The rushing is now a structural part of his value rather than a bonus. Three missed starts is the risk; the offence around him being 21st in scoring is the reason he is not the first quarterback off the board.

  • Kenneth Walker

    RBRB2 with RB1 volume

A 221-carry back walking into an offence that finished 25th in rushing.

    • 1,027 rush yds
    • 4.6 yds/carry
    • 31 rec

A thousand yards at 4.6 a carry in Seattle is a proven three-down workload, and Kansas City has not had one — the position produced almost nothing on the ground last season. Thirty-one catches on 36 targets means Reid can use him on passing downs, which is where this offence lives. The unknown is the goal line, where Mahomes ran in five himself and the team scored only fifteen rushing touchdowns in total.

  • Travis Kelce

    TETop-three TE

108 targets and seventy-six catches — the volume has not moved.

    • 76 rec, 851 yds
    • 108 targets
    • 5 TD

Seventy-six receptions across all seventeen games is still the most dependable tight-end floor in fantasy, and 108 targets says Mahomes has not stopped looking for him first. The 11.2 yards a catch is the age showing — this is a chains role now rather than a seam-splitting one. Five touchdowns on a 21st-ranked scoring offence is fair, and it is the number most likely to improve if the offence does.

  • Rashee Rice

    WRWR2, availability permitting

Seventy-eight targets in eight games — nearly ten a week when he played.

    • 53 rec, 571 yds
    • 78 targets
    • 5 TD

Fifty-three catches and five touchdowns in eight appearances is a per-game rate that would have made him a clear WR1 over a full season, and the target share says he is the receiver Mahomes trusts. He has not put a healthy season together yet, and that is the entire discount. Draft him as the highest-upside receiver on this roster and plan for the weeks he misses.

Secondary options

  • Xavier Worthy

    WRBench upside

Seventy-three targets turned into one touchdown.

    • 42 rec, 532 yds
    • 73 targets
    • 1 TD

Fourteen games, 532 yards and a single score is a disappointing second season, and the 12.7 yards a catch says the role was fine even when the production was not. Kansas City manufactured touches for him on the ground — eleven carries at 7.9 — which is how you use speed that is not winning routes yet. He is worth a late pick on talent and the touchdown regression, not on last year's usage.

  • Tyquan Thornton

    WRDeep-league dart

23.1 yards a reception, which is the highest figure of anyone here by a distance.

    • 19 rec, 438 yds
    • 37 targets
    • 3 TD

Nineteen catches for 438 yards is a season made entirely of explosive plays, and three touchdowns on 37 targets is a strong rate attached to almost no volume. That combination wins a week outright once a month and does nothing the rest of the time. Roster him only in leagues deep enough that a boom week matters more than a reliable one.

  • Emmett Johnson

    RBHandcuff worth the bench spot

The rookie most likely to end up as the only back behind Kenneth Walker.

    • Fifth-round rookie
    • 1,451 yds at Nebraska
    • 46 college catches

Two hundred and fifty-one carries for 1,451 yards and twelve scores, with 46 receptions on top, is a three-down college workload rather than a specialist's — and a back who lined up in the slot or out wide on nearly a fifth of his snaps is exactly the shape Andy Reid keeps behind a starter. He has to beat out Brashard Smith and Emari Demercado first, and while Walker is healthy the projection is about forty carries. That is the trade: nothing most weeks, and the lead job in the league's most inventive offence the week it opens.

  • Justin Fields

    QBSuperflex stash

383 rushing yards and four scores in nine games as the Jets' starter.

    • 1,259 pass yds
    • 7 TD, 1 INT
    • 383 rush yds

Seven touchdowns against one interception is the cleanest passing stretch of his career and the 383 rushing yards are why he matters in fantasy at all. He is behind a quarterback who missed three starts last season, in an offence that would suit his legs. In Superflex he is the single most valuable backup quarterback on any roster; in a one-quarterback league he is nothing until Mahomes is hurt.

Bottom lineThis was a below-average scoring offence last season and the fix was a running back, which tells you what Reid thinks the problem was. Mahomes and Kelce are priced on reputation and still worth it; Rashee Rice is the one place where the discount is larger than the risk.

Usage & Opportunity Report

Updated through Week 4 · refreshed every Tuesday

Fantasy production follows opportunity, not the other way around — so this report tracks who's on the field and who the ball is going to, before the box score catches up. The essentials: target share (share of team pass attempts), snap share, and red-zone touches. The premium layer, in each player's expandable profile: first-read share (how often the play is designed for him), air-yards share (30%+ is the alpha-receiver threshold), and expected fantasy points (xFP) vs. fantasy points over expected (FPOE) — xFP is stable, repeatable volume; FPOE is efficiency that regresses. Route share (the % of dropbacks a player runs a route on — the stat that matters most for tight ends), targets per route run (TPRR) and yards per route run (YPRR — the best receiver efficiency stat there is) join the profiles when the league's route data is published. Since 2017, receivers at a 20%+ target share average 15.3 fantasy points per game; the 10–20% group averages 9.8. That cliff is why this table exists.

  • Pass rate over expected+3.7%4thThrows more than game situations call for — the volume Kelce and Worthy live on

  • 26Walker high-value touches (in-10 carries + targets)
  • 8.0Johnson weighted opps/game
  • +16.5Walker wOpp/g vs. last season — role grew, not just efficiency

Why Walker's floor holds in PPR: He keeps 84% of the backs' third-down work as well as the early downs, so his catches don't depend on game script — a 62-catch pace. No one on this depth chart takes the hurry-up snaps from him.

The Johnson math if Walker misses time: Johnson backs up the early-down role (the valuable ones). A Walker absence projects Johnson to ~88% of weighted opportunities — about 38.3 a game, a top-12 weekly RB by volume — and why he's a STASH, not a cut.

Run Direction — carries & yards per carry by gap

  • 12.210 attLeft end
  • 6.08 attLeft tackle
  • 3.854 attMiddle
  • 6.34 attRight tackle
  • 2.86 attRight end

Designed runs only; "Middle" includes runs behind either guard.

The left side is the run game's engine: 12.2 yards per carry off left end and 6.0 behind left tackle — 22% of all designed runs go that way, and two of Walker's three longest runs came off the left side. Interior volume (54 attempts) does the clock work at 3.8; the left edge does the damage. When the line's left side sits out practice, that's a usage note, not just an injury note.

Coaching Profile & Tendencies

Play-calling tendencies carry over from season to season when the play-caller stays the same — and become unreliable the moment he changes. That's the whole reason this module exists: before you trust any Chiefs projection, you need to know whose fingerprints are on the offense and how stable they are. For the Chiefs the answer is stable: Andy Reid called this offense last season too — his 14th year on its call sheet — so last year's tendencies still mean something.

Andy Reid

West Coast — Walsh/Holmgren tree

Reid retained primary offensive play-calling when Eric Bieniemy returned as OC in 2026, saying he still enjoys calling plays while emphasizing collaborative staff input and occasional delegation.

  • Eagles head coach — called plays until handing them to Marty Mornhinweg in 20061999-2012

  • 37.6play-action

    More play-action.

Play-action rate rose from 15.3% to 37.6% of dropbacks. Play-action throws travel farther and produce more yards per attempt league-wide — a boost to downfield receiver efficiency.

  • 59.7shotgun

    More under center.

Shotgun rate fell from 81% to 59.7% — more under-center snaps, which usually travels with a heavier run game and play-action rather than quick game.

  • 1004th-down go

    Drives stay alive.

The go rate on short 4th downs jumped from 81% to 100%. Extended drives convert field-goal range into red-zone trips — touchdowns instead of three points.

Offensive coordinator · Delegation watch

Eric Bieniemy

Primary play-caller for Washington in 2023 and UCLA's offensive play-caller in 2024. During his prior Kansas City OC tenure (2018-22) Reid retained primary play-calling; that arrangement resumes in 2026

A coordinator who has run his own offense before — which makes him the delegation scenario: if Reid ever hands off play-calling mid-season, the predictive baseline on this page changes with it. Watch the ledger above.

Defensive coordinator

Steve Spagnuolo

Highly multiple, blitz-heavy 4-3-based defense featuring exotic pressure packages, simulated pressures and creative DB involvement from nickel/dime and split-safety structures

Through Week 4 the defense allows -0.09 EPA per play (5th in the NFL, a top-ten unit). A defense this stout tilts game script toward leads — more second-half carries, fewer desperation targets.

Staff continuity

Reid's 14th season calling the Chiefs offense

A continuing install: same caller, same system, 14th year. That makes the 2025 column of the table above a legitimate baseline rather than another team's data.

How he manages a backfield

Lead back's share of backfield weighted opportunities, by season called.

No clean trend: the lead back's share of backfield weighted opportunities (carries + 2×targets) has moved around season to season. Treat the current split as the read and revisit it weekly.

Play-calling by score state

Trailing by 7+60% pass · 5 plays

A 14-point pass-rate swing between leading and trailing. Ahead, the backfield eats; behind, the targets spike — check the spread before you set a flex. Through Week 4 some of these buckets are thin (play counts shown), so treat the splits as early reads.

The fantasy bottom line: 14th season of the same play-caller makes this one of the more projectable offenses in the league: 4th-down go rate above league average (100% vs 75%), and play-action rate above league average (37.6% vs 24%). The target tree leans WR, and the lead back holds 80% of the backfield's weighted opportunities.
