Washington Commanders Fantasy Football Outlook & Stats 2026

Written before Week 1Updated September 2026

Washington finished 4th in rushing and 24th in passing, and lost the turnover battle by thirteen — 31st in the league. Jayden Daniels made seven starts; Marcus Mariota made the other ten. Stefon Diggs arrives from New England, where he caught 85 passes last season — more than any Commander has managed in some time.

Core fantasy pieces

  • Jayden Daniels

    QBQB1 upside, seven-game sampleQuestionable · Elbow

Ten total touchdowns and 278 rushing yards in seven starts, then the season ended.

    • 1,262 pass yds
    • 8 TD, 3 INT
    • 278 rush yds

Forty rushing yards a start at 4.8 a carry is the floor that makes him a fantasy asset regardless of a modest 180 passing yards a game — the offence around him ranked 24th through the air. Eight touchdowns against three interceptions says the decision-making held up. Seven starts is the entire problem, and it is the second consecutive season where availability has been the deciding variable rather than production.

  • Stefon Diggs

    WRPPR WR2

Eighty-five catches on 102 targets — an 83% catch rate at age thirty-plus.

    • 85 rec, 1,013 yds
    • 102 targets
    • 4 TD

A thousand yards across all seventeen games in New England, catching 83% of what came his way, is a remarkably efficient season and an outstanding PPR floor. The 11.9 yards a reception says this is now an underneath, chain-moving role rather than a downfield one. He lands in a passing game that ranked 24th and threw nineteen touchdowns, so expect the receptions to repeat and the yardage not to grow.

  • Terry McLaurin

    WRHigh-variance WR2

15.3 yards a catch in ten games — the only downfield role this offence has.

    • 38 rec, 582 yds
    • 60 targets
    • 3 TD

Fifty-eight yards a game at 15.3 a reception is the role he has always played, and a 21% air-yards share on an offence that ranked 24th passing is a bigger claim on the deep throws than the raw totals suggest. The complication is Diggs, who caught 85 passes elsewhere last season and now shares this room — but Diggs works at 11.9 a catch, so the two jobs overlap less than the names do. Seven missed games are the reason to price him below his name rather than the reason to pass.

  • Eight rushing touchdowns on the league's fourth-best rushing offence.

    • 805 rush yds
    • 4.6 yds/carry
    • 8 TD

One hundred and seventy-five carries at 4.6 with eight scores is the most valuable role in this backfield — Washington ran twenty touchdowns in and he took the largest share of them. Nine targets across seventeen games means he does nothing in the passing game, so his weeks are entirely dependent on volume and the goal line. Rachaad White's arrival threatens the receiving work he never had rather than the carries he does.

Secondary options

  • Rachaad White

    RBPPR flexQuestionable · Shoulder

Forty catches on forty-five targets — the passing-down role Croskey-Merritt does not have.

    • 572 rush yds
    • 40 rec, 218 yds
    • 4 TD

An 89% catch rate on 45 targets is a defined third-down job, and it is exactly the complement to a lead back with nine targets all season. The rushing is unremarkable at 4.3 a carry and it does not need to be better. In PPR he has standalone value in the weeks Washington trails; in standard scoring he is a handcuff with a small role.

  • Chig Okonkwo

    TEStreaming TEQuestionable · Hamstring

Seventy-nine targets in Tennessee, arriving as the clear starter here.

    • 56 rec, 560 yds
    • 79 targets
    • 2 TD

Fifty-six catches across all seventeen games is durable, usable tight-end volume and he produced it on an offence worse than the one he joins. Two touchdowns is the ceiling problem — he has never been a red-zone target, and Washington runs it in from close range. A safe streaming option whose upside depends on Jayden Daniels playing a full season.

Bottom lineEverything here is contingent on Jayden Daniels playing seventeen games, which he has not yet done. Stefon Diggs is the safest asset because 85 receptions are a volume floor rather than an efficiency one, and that is the half of a receiving line that travels between offences. Croskey-Merritt's eight touchdowns are the cheapest source of scoring on the roster.

Usage & Opportunity Report

Updated through Week 4 · refreshed every Tuesday

Fantasy production follows opportunity, not the other way around — so this report tracks who's on the field and who the ball is going to, before the box score catches up. The essentials: target share (share of team pass attempts), snap share, and red-zone touches. The premium layer, in each player's expandable profile: first-read share (how often the play is designed for him), air-yards share (30%+ is the alpha-receiver threshold), and expected fantasy points (xFP) vs. fantasy points over expected (FPOE) — xFP is stable, repeatable volume; FPOE is efficiency that regresses. Route share (the % of dropbacks a player runs a route on — the stat that matters most for tight ends), targets per route run (TPRR) and yards per route run (YPRR — the best receiver efficiency stat there is) join the profiles when the league's route data is published. Since 2017, receivers at a 20%+ target share average 15.3 fantasy points per game; the 10–20% group averages 9.8. That cliff is why this table exists.

  • Pass rate over expected−3.5%22ndRuns more than game situations call for — a cap on the pass-catchers' volume and a floor under Croskey-Merritt

  • 13.3White weighted opps/game
  • +5.9Croskey-Merritt wOpp/g vs. last season — role grew, not just efficiency

Why Croskey-Merritt's reception count stays capped: Rachaad White owns 88% of the backs' third-down work and 46% of two-minute work. Croskey-Merritt's 17-catch pace isn't a talent question — the passing-down role belongs to White. Green flag for his rushing floor, hard ceiling on his PPR upside.

The White math if Croskey-Merritt misses time: White backs up the early-down and red-zone roles (the valuable ones). A Croskey-Merritt absence projects White to ~71% of weighted opportunities — about 25.3 a game, a top-12 weekly RB by volume — worth a bench spot in deeper leagues.

Run Direction — carries & yards per carry by gap

  • 3.76 attLeft end
  • 4.110 attLeft tackle
  • 3.152 attMiddle
  • 4.29 attRight tackle
  • 7.84 attRight end

Designed runs only; "Middle" includes runs behind either guard.

The right side is the run game's engine: 4.2 yards per carry behind right tackle and 7.8 off right end — 16% of all designed runs go that way. Interior volume (52 attempts) does the clock work at 3.1; the right edge does the damage. When the line's right side sits out practice, that's a usage note, not just an injury note.

The short middle is the efficiency engine (6.4 YPA). Daniels keeps 82% of his throws under 20 air yards, with the deep left his most explosive zone (10.5 YPA on 6 attempts). Brown's fantasy problem, mapped: a 14.9-yard aDOT puts him in the 18% deep slice of this chart while the short middle feasts. Gold = highest-YPA high-volume zone.

Coaching Profile & Tendencies

Play-calling tendencies carry over from season to season when the play-caller stays the same — and become unreliable the moment he changes. That's the whole reason this module exists: before you trust any Commanders projection, you need to know whose fingerprints are on the offense and how stable they are. For the Commanders the answer is: new fingerprints. David Blough is calling this offense for the first time in 2026, though from the same scheme family as his predecessor — so the 2026 sample, not last year's, is the signal.

    The huddle is back.

No-huddle rate fell from 62% to 8.1%. A more deliberate operation usually means fewer total snaps — a quiet tax on everyone's volume.

  • 69shotgun

    More under center.

Shotgun rate fell from 88.5% to 69% — more under-center snaps, which usually travels with a heavier run game and play-action rather than quick game.

    Fourth downs get kicked.

The go rate on short 4th downs fell from 91% to 75%. Drives that stall now end in kicks — fewer extra possessions-worth of touchdown equity.

How he manages a backfield

Lead back's share of backfield weighted opportunities, by season (* = previous staff).

Starred seasons were a previous staff's — context, not this caller's record. No clean trend: the lead back's share of backfield weighted opportunities (carries + 2×targets) has moved around season to season. Treat the current split as the read and revisit it weekly.

Play-calling by score state

Pass rate when leading, close, and trailing, 2026 through Week 4.

Leading by 7+63% pass · 24 plays
Within 753% pass · 73 plays
Trailing by 7+61% pass · 100 plays

A 2-point pass-rate swing between leading and trailing. Ahead, the backfield eats; behind, the targets spike — check the spread before you set a flex. Through Week 4 some of these buckets are thin (play counts shown), so treat the splits as early reads.

The fantasy bottom line: a new play-caller means 2025 data is context at best — what you can bank on is what Blough is showing now: shotgun rate above league average (69% vs 59%), and pass rate over expected below league average (−3.5% vs +0%). The target tree leans WR, and the lead back holds 52% of the backfield's weighted opportunities.
